When it comes to aging, people mostly think that skin is the main problem that makes their face look old. They believe that the skin is the only thing that should be treated to get rid of wrinkles and sagging skin.
However, it’s that really the case? The scientists have discovered that wrinkles actually aren’t the main reason. What makes us look older and “unhealthy” aren’t the wrinkles but the VOLUME LOSS and SAGGING of the face that happens as we age. We aren’t talking only about the sagging skin. The main reason you’re looking older is actually your sagging muscles.
So why DOES my face look old?
The skin is the largest organ in our body and also our outer surface, so, naturally, that’s where we first look for a cause of our aging appearance. However, there is much more happening behind it than we realize.
Under the skin, we can find bones, muscles, and fat, which all indicate how our face form looks and how will we age. Our skin is firmly attached to the muscles, and it will always follow their movement. For example; if our muscles start to sag, they’ll pull down our skin as well.
The best way to avoid losing volume in the cheeks, reduce double chin, and smooth your wrinkles is keeping your facial muscles strong and toned. That’s why we always say you should make facial exercises a part of your daily beauty routine.
So let’s take a peek “behind the scenes” today, shall we? Understanding your face structure will give you a much better idea of why face yoga helps you look younger and rejuvenated.
THE BONES
Over the age of 35, the number of bone regenerating cells in the face starts decreasing. Gradually, the bone around our eyes widens, creating the appearance of eye hollows and flattened cheeks. Then, the bones of the central face and jaw start degrading and rotating back and downwards. Together, these changes result in a diminished bone scaffold on which our fat, muscles, and skin sit. When our bones start to lose density, our muscles and fat start to sag.
THE MUSCLES
We have more than 50 muscles on the face and neck that we mostly never use. Over a certain period, they get atrophied, lose their shape, and shrink in volume. Every muscle that is not active is more affected by the gravitation process, which causes the sagging of the tissue and skin. If the muscle is atrophied; however, the sagging process is much quicker and harsh on your facial appearance.
Besides gravitation process and sagging of the face, there is another problem that affects your visual appearance – the tension in our muscles. Strong emotions and expressive mimics wear out the muscle and cause wrinkles. Tension in your muscles can also make your face look puffy due to blocked lymph and weak blood circulation.
THE FAT
Fat pads lay all over your face, between the muscles and your skin. We tend to have more facial fat when we’re children and start losing it as we age. That’s also the reason why you had “chubby cheeks” as you were growing up. It’s actually the fat pads that give volume to your face and prevent the skin from wrinkling – but once that fat is gone, the first wrinkles start to appear.
THE SKIN
Lastly, there is skin. As we age, the skin gets less and less blood circulation, oxygen, and nutrients, gradually losing elasticity and tone.
The skin starts to wrinkle and sag for 3 main reasons:
1. Because it’s attached to the muscle, it always follows the movement of the muscle. If the muscle loses volume, the skin has no place to lay on, and it starts wrinkling.
2. The production of collagen and elastin decreases due to lack of blood circulation, which ensures that every cell works and gets enough oxygen and nutrients.
3. The third reason is lost fat, which was serving as a “filler between the muscle and the skin.”
Due to these 3 reasons, the skin starts to appear dull, “drained out,” wrinkly and saggy – and now you can see the reason doesn’t only lie in the aging of the skin.
So how can we slow down the aging process?
BONE DENSITY
When it comes to the bone density, we can slow down the process of bone loss by eating the right foods and supplements such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin D, and hydro- collage. Focus on proper dental hygiene helps us to keep the jaw healthy. However, what really helps to increase bone density is (facial) exercise! So get that blood circulation going and strengthen your (facial) muscles!
FACIAL FAT PADS
If we move on to the facial fat pads, we can only replace fat loss by increasing fat consumption, which sadly makes us gain weight – not only in the face but also in the body. Weight gain will eliminate some wrinkles, but it will never give your face a nice shape and tone. People with more body weight tend to have fewer lines, but they still have problems with double-chin and saggy cheeks.
SKIN HEALTH
You can improve the texture of your skin by eating healthy and adding food supplements to your diet. Hydro-collagen, probiotics, and organic silica are all great options.
You also have to protect your skin from the sun and external pollution as much as possible by taking care of you of the upper skin layers. You can do this by using natural nourishing and hydrating serums, creams, and use different massage techniques.
MUSCLE ACTIVATION
The most significant change, however, comes with muscle activation. Activated muscles get more blood circulation, and the more lifted and toned they get, the more effectively they battle the gravitation process.
When we train our facial muscles, they gain more volume, replacing the “lost” face fat, and making our face appear fuller. This gives our skin a place to lay on which smooths out the wrinkles – the whole process looks a lot like blowing some air into a balloon. Imagine how a balloon looks when it’s half inflated – without air inside it gets wrinkly all over the surface. The same happens to your face if you don’t practice face yoga.
Facial exercises are also great for improving your blood circulation, which brings more nutrients and oxygen into the muscles, skin, brain, and internal glands. This enhances the production of collagen and elastin, helps the cells eliminate the toxins, and results in much smoother, clearer skin.
